Georgia State Patrol Modernizes with SmartCOP’s Patrol Car Technology
Dublin, Georgia — The Georgia State Patrol has begun deploying new patrol car technology that enhances trooper safety, boosts efficiency, and reduces administrative workload. The system, provided by SmartCOP (formerly CTS America), is now being used by Troop F, which covers 20 counties in Central Georgia.
As featured in a story by 13WMAZ, troopers are now equipped with SmartCOP’s mobile field technology. This includes in-car laptops that provide real-time access to vehicle registrations, tags, and driver records. These tools eliminate the need for radio calls and manual paperwork during traffic stops.
Field-Tested Technology, Real-Time Results
Trooper First Class Jonathan Foskey shared his experience with the upgrade:
“It’s alleviated me having to put pen to paper. I’ve been able to issue citations, warnings, and crash reports—all through the system.”
The laptop system isn’t just about paperwork. Each patrol car is now equipped with GPS tracking, giving dispatchers and fellow officers real-time awareness of trooper locations.
“If I call for help and they don’t know exactly where I am, they can look at the screen and know exactly how to get to me,” Foskey added.
Benefits Beyond the Badge
SmartCOP’s patrol car technology doesn’t just benefit law enforcement. The public also wins. With quicker access to data, drivers experience shorter stop times, and emergency response times improve with faster location sharing and dispatch coordination.
Dan Brown, with the Georgia Department of Public Safety, explained that the rollout includes more than 830 laptops statewide and is projected to save over 40,000 man-hours each year.
“We’re not spending time driving to and from the post. We’re not spending time at the post. We’re actually saving those dollars and putting them back to work in what we do—and that’s saving lives.”
A Future-Focused Investment
This initiative is funded through a combination of state budget allocations and federal Homeland Security funds. The system has been in development for more than two years, and Georgia is now seeing the operational benefits of investing in modern patrol car technology for state troopers.
